A Philosophers' Table discussion!

The last few "Philosophers' Table" discussions were popular, so AOF will keep this going for a while. This time the topic is the perception of atheism in the public eye.

When the mainstream media mentions atheism, is the context favorable, or un-? Has the perception changed over time? How about the old image of the foul-mouthed, sour, bitter atheist -- does that match your self-image? Can we do anything to improve atheism's reputation in the eyes of the general population of the U.S.? Do we need to do anything?

Come state your views. The general rule at Pilosophers' Table talks: respect each other's opinions and feelings, always help the other person be heard, and don't burn down the barn.
